I’m making prostate cancer history.
I’m taking on The Long Run
In June this year, at the age of 53, I was diagnosed with Stage 3, locally advanced prostate cancer. As an avid hiker and backcountry camper, I've always loved throwing on my backpack and hitting the trails for several days at a time.
So starting in September, for Prostate Cancer Awareness Month, I’ll be taking part in The Long Run. Throughout the month, I'll be hiking at least 72km on several trails across Victoria. I plan to do sections of the Dandenong Ranges Trail, the Murray to Mountains Rail Trail and others in and around Alpine National Park. I'll also be teaming up with some amazing partners during my travels to host fundraising events, raise awareness and get my personal story out there to encourage men to get a PSA blood test regularly.
After my diagnosis, I learned that prostate cancer is Australia’s leading cause of cancer, with 72 men newly diagnosed every day. The earlier prostate cancer is detected the better the outcome will be, so getting tested is vitally important.
